In 2015, the Employers in Romania Offered Benefits Higher by 19%

  • The highest benefits were granted during the year by companies in IT&C and pharmaceutical industry
  • On Holidays, the employees in Romania have received on average a gross bonus of 785 lei
  • Meal tickets, medical or gym subscriptions – among the most common benefits

The value of benefits provided by companies increased in 2015 by 19% compared to 2014.

Thus, companies showed more relaxed and more willing to offer benefits, whether financial or non-financial, and this is reflected in the significant increase in the percentage of bonuses from the previous year.

The greatest benefits besides salary were granted by the IT&C companies and the ones in the pharmaceutical industry, while the employees in retail received the least valuable ones besides the monthly salary.

Regarding only the winter holidays, the average bonuses offered by employers in 2015 was 785 lei gross, according to Smartree statistics.

What types of benefits are offered by the companies

The main benefits offered by companies in Romania, they are categorized as health, sports, courses, travel, insurance and gifts. These are divided into two types: monthly benefits and occasional benefits.

The monthly benefits include meal tickets, medical subscriptions to private clinics, mobile phone or laptop, transport reimbursement, gym subscriptions, relaxing or games rooms.

The occasional ones are given in the form of gift vouchers (Christmas, birthday), bonuses for the end of the year or for several occasions (Easter, Christmas, 8th of March, vacation), gifts for children in special days (June 1, Christmas), training programs, teambuilding, aids for birth / death / serious and incurable diseases, the 13th salary.

In general, the facilities may depend on the size and the profile of the organization. For example, in IT companies and advertising agencies are often found relaxing and dedicated gaming rooms, to encourage creativity“, said Raluca Penes, HR Coordinator Smartree.

The offer, more varied – from pizza in “unlucky” days to kindergarten next to office

The employers’ offer has become, in the recent years, quite comprehensive in terms of benefits. If at first the bonuses offered by the companies were strictly financial, the benefits are now, in many cases, vacations for the employee and his family, trainings, medical insurances etc. And the palette of offers grows stronger.

Some employers offer unusual benefits such as flexible working hours, additional days to the annual leave, dental insurance, restaurant vouchers and some «out of the box» bonuses, as well as special days with topics. For example, in the 13th day of the month, there are companies that offer pizza or staff going out at the restaurant. The employers also offer cooking classes or the opportunity to drive a luxury car on weekends“, mentions Raluca Penes.

In addition, some companies have started to work on a new type of facility – kindergarten near the office for employees’ children – a special project about to materialize, according to Smartree information.

An important factor that encourages the companies to provide more benefits is the fiscal aspect. The better fiscal medium for companies, the more benefits“, notes Raluca Penes.

Also for employees, the expectations and preferences have become more varied when it comes to benefits, although the tax system did not encourage such practices, except meal tickets, voluntary pensions, gifts for children up to 150 lei and death grant.

There are several factors that come into question, among them age, education level, marital status or position in company.

For example, for employees with higher education, the offer of trainings has a greater impact than providing the same benefit for an employee with secondary education, who may prefer a financial bonus“, Smartree representative concluded.

To achieve the above analysis have been taken into account over 150 companies, mostly multinationals from various industries.
