The relationship between employee and employer has become more flexible nowadays, and the employer is more attentive to the employees’ needs and offers a wider range of benefits, experts say. However, a current trend that somewhat changes the relationship between the two parties is temporary work contracts. In recent years, more and more companies that are active on the Romanian market have chosen to work with temporary staff for their projects instead of using regular employment contracts. “This offers employers flexibility in terms of supply and demand for their products or services versus headcount,” Adrian Stanciu, CEO of Smartree Romania, tells The Diplomat Bucharest. “Also, this type of contracts allows potential employees to be exposed to different fields of business, to gain new experience, and thus to use new means to build their professional careers.”
In 2013, HR company Smartree Romania posted more than 32 million lei (9.16 million Euro) in total turnover, up 20 percent in comparison with 2012. Since 2000, it has had steady growth, according to Stanciu, becoming a market leader in the payroll and personnel administration outsourcing segment, and today has 87 internal employees. In 2010, however, Smartree became the first company in Romania bought by Enterprise Investors venture fund and started another major business line, temporary staffing.
In the last 14 years, Smartree Romania has opened regional offices in Cluj-Napoca, Pitesti, Timisoara and Constanta and developed workforce management solutions, including SmartSuite and MyStaff. “Each of them addresses customers’ needs, but always in the context of their business,” says the CEO. “We do not have a ‘one size fits all’ solution, but platforms addressing different business needs. While a large manufacturing player will need a flexible payroll solution that can change inputs at any moment, a large medical one will need to schedule shifts of hundreds of employees.”
The firm had few clients in the beginning, but the number has started to increase with the addition of big names in just a few years, such as Honeywell Garrett, Ericsson and McDonald′s. Managing on payroll more than 40,000 client employees per month, the company has almost 150 active clients today, from almost all industries: financial and insurance, automotive, medical and pharmaceutical, retail, manufacturing, energy and FMCG. “This year, we would like to extend our geographical footprint and be closer to new regional markets,” says Stanciu. “Our objective for the coming years is to further increase our business, to gain even more expertise in all fields of business, to still be the first choice provider for all Romanian and multinational companies, but also to remain the same down-to-earth strategic HR partner.”
