Starting from August 24, new legislative changes have come into effect—Law No. 193/2020, which amends and supplements Law No. 448/2006. These changes are aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of people with disabilities.
Companies and public institutions are now required to employ people with disabilities in at least 4% of their total workforce. If they fail to meet this requirement, they must choose one of the following obligations:
a) Pay a monthly amount to the state budget equivalent to the gross minimum national wage multiplied by the number of positions not filled by people with disabilities.
b) Pay a monthly amount to the state budget equivalent to at least 50% of the gross minimum national wage multiplied by the number of positions not filled by people with disabilities. The remaining amount, up to the sum required in point a), must be used to purchase, through partnerships, products or services produced by people with disabilities employed in authorized protected units.
