The Holy Friday is officially a day off for the Romanian employees

Good news for Romanian employees: Besides the 14 free days set by law, starting this year, the Holy Friday was declared a non-working day. Thus, the Romanians will have a four-day mini break for Easter. The Holy Friday, the last friday before Easter, will officially become a bank holiday, according to a legislative amendment signed by the president. Thus, the Romanians will have a four-day mini break of Easter. The legislative proposal for completing paragraph (1) of art. 139 of the Law no. 53/2003 – The Labor Code, which provides the addition of a new legal day off to the list of those already existing in the Labor Code, was promulgated by the Head of State after it was adopted by the Chamber of Deputies as the Chamber of Decisions, at the end of February. The importance of this day in the Christian tradition was one of the reasons invoked by the initiators of the proposal. The explanation of the arguments presented on the Senate website also includes the fact that Holy Friday is considered a bank holiday in other 16 EU countries. The Labor Code thus sets the following days as bank holidays in which they are not working:1 si 2 ianuarie;

  • the 1st and the 2nd of January;
  • January 24 (Day of the Union of Romanian Principalities);
  • Holy Friday, first and second day of Easter;
  • 1st of May;
  • 1st of June, children’s day;
  • the first and the second day of Pentecost;
  • August 15 (St Mary’s Day);
  • November 30 (St Andrew’s Day);
  • 1st of December (National Day of Romania);
  • 25th and 26th of December (first and second day of Christmas).

Also, the Labor Code provides for two additional days off for each of the three annual religious holidays, so declared by official religious cults other than the Christian ones, for persons belonging to them. Concretely, non-Christians have the right to receive days off both on the occasion of Christian legal holidays (plus free legal rights without religious insignificance: 1st and 2nd of January, 1st of May, 1st of December) and on the occasion of three major holidays of their own religion.
